Abby had grown accustomed to being our only cat for the better part of a year. She did not welcome the kitten who had entered her territory without scruple （顾忌）.In an effort to keep Mowgli out of harm's way, our response to Abby's attack was to put him in a cage so they could safely check each other out. And then we soon realized that fairness required that the two kitties should take turns sharing the burden of staying in the cage.It only took a few days for things to improve. The turning point came when we walked into a room and saw Abby sleeping pressed up against the cage, with Mowgli sleeping peacefully inside. The strategy had worked and their friendship blossomed.A few years passed, with Mowgli weighing in at about twelve pounds to Abby's eight. All the same, it was clear that Abby- never having fully given up her seniority- managed to occupy a leadership position. All she had to do was move in close with an air of calm, and Mowgli yielded space.It didn,t really matter whether I understood all the mysteries of their kitty world. What mattered was their endless hours of grooming （理毛）each other while awake, and how they stayed with each other while asleep.Although Abby and Mowgli were free to go outside when they asked, they rarely did so. Even when they were out, they seemed happy to stay close to the house, climbing and playing in the trees on our small but heavily wooded lot.It was on a pleasant spring day when leaves were being cleaned up, and I was otherwise occupied inside. At some point, I noticed Abby following me around and nervously pacing.Distracted by my work, I didn't pay much attention. But when she anxiously ran to the back slider door, began pacing in circles, and cried out in an unusually loud shout, I knew something was wrong. I followed her as she ran into the bathroom, jumped on the sill （窗台）of an open window and continued to roar.She looked at me with panic in her eyes, and then directed her attention hack outside.As I quickly yet carefully opened the black plastic bag, Mowgli jumped out.
