Hisparents said Matthew had an ear for music before he could even talk. When he was three yearsold, he played nursery songs with both hands and played the chords (和音)and the melody of thesongs at the same time, but most kids didn,t do that. Matthew hadn't had a lesson or anything, nsaid Matthew parents. The great pianist can now play anything he hears. His performance is really remarkable. Lessthan 20 years old, Matthew has toured in the headlined famous venues from Carnegie Hall to theKennedy Center, and won a number of music awards. That drew the attention of Dr. Charles Limb, a neurologist (神经病学家). He uses MRI brainscans to better understand how extremely creative people do what they do. Specifically, Limbwants to know why the, brains of certain artists could better give rise to new ideas. So far, severalartists have taken the exams. Dr. Limb also approached Matthew, and made him undergo two MRIexams first while he was in different conditions, including music, and then while he wasplaying on a keyboard.D匚 Limb found that Matthew,s brain seemed to have reused its disused visual cortex (视觉!支层)to build other spirit pathways. Even when -Matthew was simply listening to one of his favoritebands, his entire visual cortex lit up. "It seems like his brain is taking that part of the tissue that'snot being activated by sight and using it to feel music, which is beyond our expectation/5 said Dr.Limb.Matthew's teacher, Dalia Sakas, wants to make sure Matthew isn't just a flash in the musicworld. She thinks he needs to learn to read braille (盲文)music, which is a Slow process. Matthewdoes not like to slow down. He just wants to play music. At the piano, what he feels is just joy.1. What can we know about Matthew when he was a little boy?A. He learned to speak much later than other kids.B. He liked watching his parents play the piano.C. He dreamed of touring around the world.D. He showed an early gift for music.2. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “remarkable" in Paragraph 2?A. BeneficiaL B Natural. C. Common. D. Fantastic.3. Why did Dr. Limb ask some artists to take the exams?A. To analyze their personality.B. To understand their lifestyles.C. To know their brain activities.D. To judge their health conditions.4. What might Dr. Limb feel about his findings according to Paragraph 4?A. Doubtful. B. Surprised. C. Worried. D. Satisfied.BForeign visitors to the UK might be disappointed when they learn that not everyone therespeaks like Harry Potter and his friends. Usually, there,s an assumption by many non-Brits thateveryone in Britain speaks with what,s known as a Received Pronunciation (RP,标准发音)accent, also called "the Queen,s English”. However, while many people do talk this way, most Britonsspeak in their own regional accents().Scouse, Glaswegian and Black Country dialect(方言)一from Liverpool, Glasgow and the WestMidlandsare just three of the countless non-RP accents that British people speak with. There areeven differences in accents between towns or cities just 30 kilometers apart. What is even moredisappointing is that not speaking in a RP accent may mean a British person is judged and eventreated differently in their everyday life.In a 2015 study by The University of South Wales, videos of people reading a passage in threedifferent UK accents were shown to a second group of people. The group then rated howintelligent they thought the readers sounded. The lowest-rated accent was Brummie, native topeople from Birmingham, a city whose accent is considered working class. However, there is no need to be disappointed though you are not speaking in a RP accent. Infact, doing thc oppo(ite may even give you strength.Kong Seongjae, 25, is an internet celebrity from Seoul. After studying in the UK, he picked upseveral regional accents. He's now famous fbr his online videos, where he shows off the variousaccents he,s learned. "British people usually get really excited when I use some of their localdialect words, and they become much friendlier. I think it makes a bit of bond between localpeople and foreigners to speak in their local accent." he said.So if you're working on perfecting your British accent, try to speak like someone fromLiverpool, Glasgow or Birmingham. You may not sound like Harry Potter, but you are likely tomake more friends.5. What can we infer from paragraph 1?A. Non-Brits usually hold that all Britons speak in a RP accent.B. Only uthe Queen,s English” is accepted in the UK.C. Foreign visitors are disappointed at their own spoken English.D. Any Received Pronunciation around the world is also called “the Queen's English”.6. What do people think of the Brummie accent?A. Fa
