80%Ofhea1thcareCEOsareworriedaboutgeopo1itica1uncertainty86%ofhea1thcareCEOsseetechno1ogyreshapingtheirindustryinthenextfiveyears20thCEOSurvey:Hea1thcareindustrykeyfindingsG1oba1isation:Underwaybutundersiege?/Theshortterm:Prospectsforgrowth/Furtherout:Addressingnewcha11enges/Thebestoftimes,theworstoftimesAnewtreatment?:Hea1thcarefindingsfromthe20thAnnua1G1oba1CEOSurvey56hea1thcareCEOsinterviewedin27countriesPWCAboutthe20thAnnua1G1oba1CEOSurveyInthisyear'sSurveywecanvassedtheviewsof56Hea1thcareCEOsfrom27countriesaboutwherewearenow,whatthefuturemayho1d,andwhatbusinesscandotomakeapositivedifference.In2OyearsinsidethemindoftheCEO.What,snext?,weexp1orewhat1,379CEOsin79countriesin2017thinkaboutthreeimperatives:managingmanandmachinetocreateaworkforcethat,sfitforthedigita1age;preservingorganisationa1trustinawor1dofincreasing1yvirtua1interactions;andmakingg1oba1isationworkforeveryonebyensuringthebenefitsaredistributedmorefair1y.Thecha11engecommontoa11threeimperativesis1eadership.Inatimeofheightenedanxietiesjuxtaposedwiththehighest1eve1softransparencywehaveexperienced,how1eadersengagewithemp1oyeesandstakeho1ders(bothpub1icandprivate)hasneverbeenmoreimportant.Thewor1dhaschangedmoreinthe1ast20yearsthaninanyotherprevioustwodecadesinitshistory.G1oba1isationandtechno1ogica1advanceshavetransformedhowandwherewe1iveandwork,theba1anceofg1oba1po1itica1powerhasshifted,morepeop1ethaneverare1ivingincities,andthewor1disfacingtheenormouscha11engeofcombattingc1imatechange.Thebusinesswor1dhasa1sobeenconfrontedbythesesamemegatrendssomehavecreatednewrisks;othershave1edtosignificantopportunities.Noorganisationhasbeenimmune.Theascendancyofcorporationsaroundtheg1obehasboostedprosperity:it,screatedjobs,raised1ivingstandardsandde1iveredpioneeringproductsandservicesthathaveimprovedpeop1e7s1ives.Now,however,thewor1disatacrossroads,andCEOsrecognisethat.Themomentumbehindg1oba1isationandtechno1ogica1changeshowsnosignofs1owing,butthedirectionoftrave1isno1ongerasc1earasitwas.Wecou1dbemovingtowardsamoreinc1usivesociety,orwecou1dbefacingamoredangerousanddivergentwor1d,withamuchgreaterriskofconf1ict.Specifica11yforCEOszitistimetoraisethero1eofbusinessinsocietyandengagemorebroad1ytohe1pgovernmentandthepub1ic.Itistimetostepforwardwiththeirownso1utionsandco11aboratewithmu1tip1ep1ayersinsocietytoboosttrustandbui1dthewor1dweneedforthefuturebecauseifexecutedproper1y,businessisaforceforgood.Inthisyear,sSurveywecanvassedtheviewsof56Hea1thcareCEOsfrom27countriesaboutwherewearenow,whatthefuturemayho1d,andwhatbusinesscandotomakeapositivedifference.ofHea1thcareCEOsthinkg1oba1isationhasfaci1itatedgreaterconnectivityG1oba1isation:Underwaybutundersiege?Businesshasunquestionab1ybenefitedfromg1oba1isationnotjusttrade,moreconnectivityandgreaterproductivity,but1owerbarrierstoentrymeanthatagi1estart-upscancompeteeffective1ywithmu1tinationa1s.Inoursurvey,64%ofHea1thcareCEOsthinkg1oba1isationhasfaci1itatedgreaterconnectivity,and59%seeagreaterf1owofgoodsandtradeasaresu1t,bothbroad1yin1inewiththeg1oba1resu1ts.Companies,therefore,havebeenoneofg1oba1isation,sbigwinners.ButCEOsacrossa11sectorshavenotbeenb1indtothecha11enges;infacteversincethefinancia1crisis,CEOshavebeenwarningthatdespitethefactthatnear1yabi11ionpeop1ehavebeen1iftedoutofpoverty,thegapbetweenrichandpoorwasgrowing.On1y14%ofHea1thcarerespondentsbe1ieveg1oba1isationishe1pingtoc1osethisgap,andon1y32%be1ieveit,screatingamoreski11edandeducatedworkforce.1ikewiseon1y11%sayit,spromotedthedeve1opmentoffairertaxsystemsversus14%g1oba11y.Hea1thcareCEOsareevenmorepessimisticonc1imatechangeon1y7%be1ieveg1oba1isationishe1pingthere,comparedwithag1oba1averageof15%.CEOsz1ong-he1dscepticismhasbeenamp1ybomeoutbyrecentevents.Greaterinternationa1competitionhas1edtojob1ossesinsomecountries,andincreasedmigrationhasputpressureonpub1icservices.Inemergingeconomies,themidd1ec1assisgrowinganddoingwe11,butmanymi11ionsofpeop1ehavenotseenthesameimprovementintheir1ivingstandards.2016wascharacterisedbypo1itica1upheava1sthatwentagainstmostexpectations,andtheriseofapopu1istsentimentwhichis1eadingtosignificantpo1itica1instabi1ity,andcou1da1soimpacteconomicprosperitybyforcinggovernmentstobecomemoreprotectionist.NowonderHea1thcareCEOsaresoconcernedaboutuncertaineconomicgrowth:82%areworriedaboutthis,buttheyaremoreconcernedthantheirpeersaboutgeopo1itica1uncertainty80%versus74%andmarked1ymoresoaboutsocia1instabi1ity:79%comparedwith68%(seeFigure1).Butattheverytopoftheir1istisover-regu1ation,whichishard1ysurprising,giventhenatureofthehea1thcaremarket(84%asagainstanaverageof80%).Theyagreewiththeirpeersinseeingmorec1osednationa1po1iciesasdetrimenta1togrowth(57%).Figure1:Over-regu1ationanduncertaineconomicgrowtharetopconcernsforHea1thcareCEOsQ:Howconcernedareyouaboutthefo11owingeconomic,po1icy,socia1,environmenta1andbusinessthreatstoyourorganisation'sgrowthprospects?ToptenthreatsTopfourriserssince2015Over-regu1ation84ooUncertaineconomicgrowth82ooGeop
