Aside from language, intercultural communication focuses onsocial attributes, thought patterns, and the cultures of different groupsof people. It also involves understanding the different cultures,languages and customs of people from other countries. Interculturalcommunication plays a role in social sciences such as anthropology,cultural studies, linguistics, psychology and communication studies.Intercultural communication is also referred to as the base forinternational businessese There are several cross-cultural serviceproviders around who can assist with the development of interculturalcommunication skills. Research is a major part of the development ofintercultural communication skillsThe American social and cultural identity has been a research focusfor a long time. The term ucul tural pluralism“ was coined by Horace Karenwho maintains that “ tolerance of difference itself is part of thethe same goal by different mutes- Nowadays, this word usually refers tothe spirit feature of the human society, or generally means the wholematerial and immaterial products created by human beings. For example, Theculture of the United States is primarily a Western culture, but is alsoinfluenced by Native American, African, Asian, Polynesian, and LatinAmerican cultures. American culture started its formation over 10,000years ago with the migration of Paleo-Indians from Asia into the regionthat is today the continental United States. It has its own unique socialand cultural characteristics such as dialect, music, arts, social habits,cuisine, and folklore. The United States of America is an ethnically andracially diverse country as a result of large-scale immigration from manydifferent countries throughout its history.1 'its chief early Europeaninfluences came from English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish settlers ofcolonial America during British rule. British culture, due to colonialties with Britain that spread the English language, legal system and othercultural inheritances, had a formative influence. Other importantinfluences came from other parts of western Europe, especially Germany,France, and Italy. But now the United States has often been thought of asa melting pot, but beginning in the late 1990s and early 2000s, it trendstowards cultural diversity, pluralism and the image of a salad bowlinstead. Due to the extent of American culture, there are many integratedbut unique social subcultures within the United States. The culturalidentity is the basis of studying intercultural communication. What isthe breakthrough in this study is that cultural identity is explored fromthe perspective of intercultural communication, and studied withinterdisciplinary approaches. Due to multi-disciplinary nature ofintercultural communication, first, we must understand each other' sculture and the importance of intercultural communication, in the processof intercultural communication in order to achieve success ofintercultural communication; intercultural communication is successfulor not, depends on the degree of cultural understanding.3. The Culture Influence on Intercultural communicationbetween China and the WestAs we all know that a country, including China, is constantlyinfluenced by foreign at all times, as long as she wants to exchange withothers and develop herself. China has been influenced, we can see clearly,mostly in the past one hundred years. Moreover, an even greater impacthas involved every aspect since the reform and opening. In general, Theycan be summarized as economic and cultural impacts. Here, we tentativelydiscuss the influences of foreign culture. Because economic exchangeswill inevitably bring about the cultural exchanges and economic impactto some extent also contain in the culture, the influences are asfollowings:3. 1 The Influence of Hollywood Movies on Chinese CultureWith its rapid developm entin China, H ollywood m ovies havebecome indispensable for the Chinese m ovie m arket and inevitably exertstrong influence on Chinese people. After enough exposure to the movies,people find the differences in culture between America and China, andmake imperceptible changes, thus affecting Chinese traditional culture.Hollywood movies have played a profound effect on Chinese culture overthe years.
