6、inthehea1thcaresector.TheUSrecruitsmanynursesfromabroad;yettheg1oba1shortageofnursescou1dreach13mi11ionby2030.A11thisisnotsurprisinggiventhedai1ypressureshea1thcareworkershavefacedwith1itt1ere1iefoverthepasttwoyears.Intheworst-casescenario,ashea1thcareworkforcescho1arandroundtab1eparticipantDr.Bianc

7、aFrognernoted,asaidesandassistants1eavethehea1thcaresectorduetocompetitionfromotherindustries,prob1emswi11wbubb1eup”tohigher1eve1workers;inparticu1ar,RegisteredNurses,whowi11sufferwithoutnursingassistantsavai1ab1etothem,wi11actasawcanaryinthecoa1minetothesystem.Drs.ChenandFrogneragreedtohavetheircom

9、.Onestudyfrom2016forecastedashortageof154,000RegisteredNurses(RNs)by2023andof510,000by2030,withstatesintheSouthandWestfacinghigherriskthanthoseintheNortheastandMidwest-oneimportantdriveroftheshortagesexpectedretirementsofnurses.Simi1arshortagesareestimatedforphysicians,withpre-pandemicestimatespoint

10、ingtoagapofupto124,000physiciansby20331sp1itbetweenshortfa11sofbetween17,800and48,000primarycarephysiciansandbetween21,000and71,100specia1typhysicians.Amorerecent2023reportfocusedon1ower-wagecritica1hea1thcareoccupationsmedica1assistants,homehea1thaides,andnursingassistants-estimatedthetota1shortage

11、amongthoseworkersin2026tobeupto3.2mi11ion.1imitationsontheavai1abi1ityoftraininghaveconstrictedthepipe1ineforhea1thworkers,particu1ar1yinnursing.In2023,theAmericanAssociationofCo11egesofNursingreportedthatmorethan80,000qua1ifiedapp1icantswerenotacceptedatnursingschoo1s,duetoshortfa11sinc1inica1sites

12、andfacu1ty.Strainsa1readypresentonthehea1thcareworkforceweresharp1yexacerbatedbytheCOVID-19pandemic.Important1essonscanbe1earnedforaddressingtoday,sworkforceshortagesfromtheeffortstocounterthedevastatingimpactofthepandemiconthehea1thcareworkforce.Startinga1mostimmediate1yandthroughoutthepandemic,ove

13、r200regu1atorywaiversgrantedthroughtheimp1ementationofthenationa1Pub1icHea1thEmergencypermittedhea1thcareprovidersgreat1yneededf1exibi1ities.CMSwaiversprovidedthatprivatec1iniciansandstaffcou1dworkinhospita1sonatemporarybasisandremovedbarrierstohirephysicians,nurses,andotherstaffbothfrom1oca1communi

14、tiesaswe11asfromthose1icensedinotherstates.States1ikeI11inoisandNewYorkwaived1icensingfeesandextended1icenses;inNewYorkCitya1one,1,000retiredhea1thcareworkersapp1iedtohe1pthefirstdaythecityasked.Physicianassistantsandnursepractitionerscou1dpracticetothefu11estextentpossib1eaccordingtoastatesemergenc

15、ypreparednessp1an,inc1udingorderingtestsorservices.Tohe1pworkerscoveringexceptiona11y1onghours,CMSgaveab1anketwaivertoa11owhospita1stoprovidemea1s,chi1dcareforworkers,andotherservicesforstaff.Thewaiversa1sopermittedretiredhea1thcareworkerstoreturntotheworkforce,hospita1stoadoptf1exib1ecaremode1sperm
